Authorization Of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Lifted
Usually health insurers require patients to jump through a lot of hoops before they can try something like transcranial magnetic stimulation or TMS for depression. Most require use of anti-depressants for a period of time, often times different ones, and usually some talk therapy. But there’s been growing coverage and appreciation that TMS can really help people perhaps sooner and in lieu of pharmaceuticals. One insruer, known to most as Cigna, but renamed Evernorth a few years ago, has decided to remove the prior authorization requirement for clinics offering transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Most payers require prior authorization and a history of failed treatment before covering the treatment for major depressive disorder, PTSD, and OCD.
