Counselor Turns Detention Into Hike

Leslie Trundy takes students on hikes instead of traditional classroom detention at Morse High School in Maine. Students don’t have to do the hike, but can opt for the 3.5 mile jaunt on a nearby trail.

During the hike, Trundy says she’s constantly scanning—”Who’s hanging back? Who’s ready to lead? I vary the pace, separate the group briefly for quiet reflection when it makes sense, and check in with kids who seem withdrawn or upset….they’re allowed to walk in silence if talking feels like too much.”
