Cannabis Use Disorder Rising

Cannabis use disorder is rising among men and women, not just younger people, with the potency and impact growing and the portion of people admitted to care with cannabis use disorder as their primary means of admission increasingly drastically. A study of 180,000 adults found an increase in the disorder jumping 2% among men and 1% among women - which sound small, but when just 7.3% of males had the disorder initially in the study, then 9.3% by the end, that’s eye opening. Women’s usage rose from 4.5% to 5.6% in the 2021 to 2024 period. Cannabis use is causing poor sleep, productivity, psychiatric mindset, and now more clearly medical costs associated with lung disease.

The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The experts involved in the data-based research believe the increase is tied to more potent products and access and declining public perception of the harm from cannabis.
